The Croft
|
The opening exchanges were fairly even until The Croft took the lead following a cross from the left which found an unmarked player who side-footed the ball home. The Croft went close to doubling their led but the shot from the right went wide of the far post. The Croft continued to press and were denied a second by the crossbar. Oakhurst’s first foray into their opponents half ended with them firing over the horizontal. The Croft then doubled their lead somewhat fortuitously. Oakhurst’s custodian seemed to have a fairly tame effort from range easily covered. Standing to the left of his goal, the ‘keeper went to catch the ball but it slipped through his hands and bounced sideways off his shin. Before he could react, the ball had crept over the line and into the net. The lads from Pioneer Road seemed shocked by this and The Croft made it 3:0 two minutes later with a delightful move involving several one-touch passes. Oakhurst were unable to prise open their opponents’ defence and failed to test the opposition’s ‘keeper during the remainder of the first half. The team from North Swindon came out after the break determined to reduce the arrears and signalled this to their opponents with a volleyed shot which unfortunately went both high and wide of the goal. Oakhurst then became the architects of their own downfall when they played the ball across their own penalty area in an attempt to negate an attack. However, this was pounced on by a quick-thinking Croft player who made it 4:0 just five minutes into the second stanza. The match, which had been quite physical thus far began to see a greater number of challenges which merited the referee’s intervention. A free-kick to The Croft close to the half-way line went wide before another attempt soon after saw one Croft player display some nimble footwork to win the ball and make space for himself to shoot. Unfortunately, his good work was undone by a poorly directed shot at goal. The Croft continued to dominate proceedings during the half with just one shot from Oakhurst forcing a fine save from The Greens’ goalkeeper. The Old Town school worked hard to preserve their ‘clean sheet’ and become the seventeenth school to add their name to the trophy.
